Pinwheels
Fourth graders Semaj Clemons, Paizley Wilson, and Izzy Turnage assist Newton County Elementary School Art Teacher Beth Teacher in the placement of the pinwheels this week as their fellow classmates await their turn. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who were art teachers at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. The project was quickly embraced by their students and the entire school community. Now, millions of art teachers, teachers, parents, children and adults have joined in on the movement, all who desire peace in our world. The project is twofold, on one side of the paper, children write down what peace means to them, writing their feelings about peace/living in harmony.
