Newton County Academy’s Cooper Savell was recently recognized as the Class 1A Offensive Player of the Year.
Savell had a monster year for the Generals with 2,098 yards rushing on 182 carries with 2098 yards on 184 carries with 33 touchdowns. Savell also threw for 133 yards and had 283 yards receiving for 2,514 yards of total offense.
Also named to the All-MAIS offense team were lineman Andrew Boothe and Ethan Woodham, both of whom played in the Class 1A All-Star game last week.
On defense, Taylor Burt was named as a defensive lineman after recording 64.5 tackles. Burt also rushed for 1,199 yards and threw for 448 yards.
Junior Ethan Woodham was selected to the team after recording 45 tackles last season. Woodham also played in the MAIS Class 1A Futures game.
Also making the All-MAIS team was Amos Castillo, who led the Generals with 65.5 tackles. Castillo also earned the Defensive MVP for Team White in the All-Star game last week.
MHSAA All-state teams
In Class 4A, Newton County’s Logan Evans was named the Class 4A first-team punter. Defensive back Cam Bell was named a second-team defensive back, while Cohen Liggett was named a second team long snapper.
In Class 3A, Union’s Aidan Davis was named a first-team defensive lineman after recording 79.5 tackles for the Yellowjackets while Zie Buckley was a first-team selection at free safety after recording 76 tackles and six interceptions. Senior linebacker Jordan Smith was a second-team pick after leading Union with 104 tackles.
In Class 2A, Lake’s Kaelyb Williams was a first-team selection at wide receiver after recording 625 yards on 25 catches. Senior Jamarrion Blaylock was a second-team pick at running back after rushing for 979 yards on 160 carries.
