Even with the baseball team still in the playoffs, the Lake Hornets held spring football practice this season.
The Hornets played Forest in a two-quarter contest and beat the rival Bearcats 6-0 last week.
Lake coach Tate Hanna said he was pleased with what he saw.
“I thought we looked pretty good,” Hanna said. “I thought we moved the ball pretty well. We did fumble twice inside the 20 but those are things that I think we can correct. I thought O’Darious Johnson did a good job of controlling the game at quarterback. He completed seven or eight passes and threw a lot of short-game stuff and got the ball out of his hands.”
Hanna said he was especially pleased with his running backs.
“I thought we ran the ball really well,” Hanna said. “This might be the best group of running backs that I have had in my 23 years. We had four guys running the football and I thought they all ran the ball well. We put some of those other guys at slots and did some speed sweeps and quick screens. We played a lot of folks and that was without the baseball team. Coach (Kyle) Watson came back to us from West Jones and he said we have seven or eight guys who are better than anybody he had down there.”
Hanna said the Hornets’ defense was especially good but that was to be expected.
“We’ve got eight starters back on defense and I thought they played really well,” Hanna said. “Of course, we expected them to play well with that many guys back. And most of the guys we played over there who didn’t start got a lot of playing time last year. We got in 15 days but only really worked on defense one day. We’ve got two guys over there who are going to be all-state guys and we are excited about that side of the football.”
