Four of the six area schools will be at home this week, while the other two won’t have to travel far.
Here’s a look at this week’s contests.
Southeast Lauderdale at Newton
In a battle of Tigers, Southeast Lauderdale will visit Newton for a homecoming contest.
Southeast is 0-3 on the season. They lost to Noxapater (28-0), Enterprise (47-14), and Northeast Lauderdale (20-0).
“It’s going to be an interesting game,” Newton coach Jeffrey Crosby. “I think they run the wing-T and that’s what will make it interesting. We have to face something that we haven’t seen all year long. I think we will be physical enough to stop them. Offensively, we should be able to run the ball and try to incorporate the pass to keep them honest.”
Scott Central at Newton County
The Cougars will try to bounce back from a tough loss to Northeast Jones as they host Scott Central this week.
The Rebels are 0-3 on the season with losses to Northeast Lauderdale (17-12), Union (26-13) and Morton (14-3).
“They are 0-3 but they are a good football team,” County coach Bobby Bass said. “They are 0-3 but we are 1-2. It’s going to be a hard-fought, physical game. They really aren’t a bad football team. We just have to learn how to finish off games when we have an opportunity to win.”
West Lauderdale at Union
The Yellowjackets will try to stay unbeaten this week but have a stern test as they host West Lauderdale.
The Knights are 2-1 with wins over Seminary (40-14) and Morton (28-27) but lost to Neshoba Central (27-20) last week.
“They have the same culture as when I was there,” Union coach Jordan Wren said. “They have tough, well-coached kids. They are a very physical football team. They run a lot of tight ends and pin and pull on offense.”
Central Holmes at NCA
The Generals will be back at home this week as they host Central Holmes, who dropped down this season to play eight-man.
“It looks like they have some good athletes,” NCA coach Stevie Nelson said. “If we do what we are supposed to do, we should be fine. They do have an athlete that we can be difficult to stop if he gets going.”
Lake at Choctaw Central
The Hornets will hit the road as they travel to Choctaw Central to take on the unbeaten Warriors.
Choctaw is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Newton (40-15), Cherokee (47-7) and Philadelphia (21-7).
“They are playing some good ball,” Lake coach Tate Hanna. “They are going to be big and physical up front and athletic on the outside and at quarterback. It seems like it’s the same kind of kids that plays for them every year. They are big and tall on the offensive line. The quarterback is scary running it and can sling it. We will have to pick it up on defense.”
Last year, Choctaw beat Lake 19-14.
Sebastopol at Clarkdale
The Bobcats will hit the road this week as they travel to Lauderdale County to take on Clarkdale.
The Bulldogs are 3-0 under new head coach Rob Roberts. They have wins over Resurrection Catholic (35-7), Stringer (47-24) and Pelahatchie (42-13).
“It doesn’t get any easier this week,” Sebastopol coach Keith Brown said. “They’re 3-0 and really good. It will be another challenge against a bigger opponent. They have weapons and quarterback who can spin it. He has some big receivers and a running back that can go. We want to be battle tested once division starts and these games would get us prepared for that. We just have to keep our heads up and keep getting better.”
