With three teams playing on the road this week, the highlight of the local games will be in Lake.
Unbeaten Union travels to Lake to take on the Hornets in Death Valley. Meanwhile, Sebastopol tries to get back on track as they host Pelahatchie for homecoming.
Also, Newton County Academy opens district play at Prentiss Christian, Newton plays at Leake County and Newton County plays at Mize.
Union at Lake
The Yellowjackets will hit the road this week as they take on Lake.
Union coach Jordan Wren knows that his team will have a challenge this week.
“Playing at Lake is a challenge in itself,” Wren said. “Anytime you mention Lake, you know they are going to be a well-coached team. It doesn’t matter what the records are in this game. We went there two years ago and barely escaped with a win. It will be a quality game and fans will get their money’s worth.”
Last year, Lake won 30-18 at Union.
“Last year, they were coming off a big win and this year they are coming off another big win,” Lake coach Tate Hanna said. “I expect them to play us hard. But it’s hard to come off an emotional win like the one they had last week. Coach Wren and his staff do a good job on the offensive side of the ball. They put you in some binds with what they do and good enough up front to give you problems. It should be a big crowd.”
Pelahatchie at Sebastopol
Life without two-time Class 2A player of the Year Adarius McDougle has been rough on the Sebastopol Bobcats.
The Bobcats fell to 1-3 on the season and had their worst game of the season last week in a 38-0 loss to Clarkdale. They hope to turn things around this week as they host Pelahatchie for homecoming.
“Pelahatchie is improving every week and have played some tough teams as well,” coach Keith Brown said. “We have lots of common opponents. It’s homecoming for us and there will be lots of excitement. We need something good to happen early and hopefully can build off that.”
The Chieftains are 1-3 on the season with a 40-16 win over Enterprise and losses to Pisgah (20-14), Clarkdale (42-13) and Richland (30-20).
NCA at Prentiss Christian
The Generals will hit the road this week as they open district play against Prentiss Christian.
The Saints are 2-3 on the season with wins over Tensas (32-6) and Hebron (32-6). They have losses to Wilkinson (24-0), Tallulah (58-36) and Christ Covenant (35-14).
“I think they lost a good bit off of last year’s team,” NCA coach Stevie Nelson said. “I just know that when you go on the road, things are going to be different. We have to handle that part and hopefully that is good enough.”
Last year, NCA beat Prentiss 42-13.
Newton at Leake County
The Tigers will hit the road this week as they make the short trip to Walnut Grove to take on Leake County.
The Gators are 0-4 on the season with losses to Leake Central (42-26), West Lowndes (34-24), Lake (20-14) and Velma Jackson (51-0).
“Thy are a decent ball club,” Newton coach Jeffrey Crosby. “They are going in the right direction and playing hard. They are big up front. I think we are fast but they are bigger up front. I think we have a chance. We have to iron out some wrinkles on offense.”
Newton County at Mize
The Cougars will hit the road this week as they take on Mize.
The Bulldogs are 1-3 on the season with a win over Taylorsvile (27-13) and losses to Presbyterian Christian (28-25), Magee (41-36) and Raleigh (44-14).
“They run some wing-T stuff so we will be facing it for the fourth week in a row,” County coach Bobby Bass said. “They run some spread and some wing-T and you have to be able to stop them both. They will go two-tight, double wings and run outside veer and wingback counters, reverses and stuff like that. It’s a challenge to stop.”
