The Newton County Academy Generals had one of their best offensive games of the season last week against rival Sylva Bay.
But it wasn’t enough as the Saints built a 35-0 lead and held on to take a 35-10 win on Thursday night.
The Generals fall to 0-7 on the season and the schedule doesn’t get any easier as NCA faces Tri-County Academy this week.
“I thought our offensive and defensive lines had their best games of the season,” NCA coach Arnie Oakes said. “Sylva Bay brought in a few players that made them a lot better. They were 0-6 before they beat us and Centreville. You take those kids out of the equation and it’s a different game.”
After trading punt to open the game, Sylva Bay got on the board as they went 42 yards in five plays, scoring on an 8-yard run with 4:34 left in the first quarter. The PAT was good and Sylva Bay led 7-0.
The Generals appeared to be moving on offense as they hit a 40-yard pass play but fumbled on the play. The Stains then went 77 yards in eight plays and scored on an 18-yard run with 46 seconds left in the first quarter for a 14-0 lead.
The Saints added two more scores in the second quarter as they scored on passes of 59 and 14 yards and led 28-0 at the half.
The Generals got the ball to start the second half but were forced to punt and the Saints returned it to the NCA 3. The Saints then scored on a quarterback sneak to take a 35-0 lead.
The Generals put together a 10-play drive that ended with Lawson Reeves booting a 26-yard field goal to cut the score to 35-3.
The Generals added a late score as they went 75 yards in four plays. After a 30-yard pass to Reeves, Colby Hollingsworth scored on a 6-yard run with two minutes left in the game. Reeves booted the PAT and NCA cut the lead to 35-10.
On offense, the Generals had 160 yards rushing and 78 passing for 238 yards of total offense. Colby Hollingsworth led the Generals with 108 yards rushing on 16 carries. Zandar Meeks had 24 yards on seven carries while Jax Porter had 21 yards on five carries. Lawson Reeves had 78 yards receiving on two catches.
