Newton County Academy’s softball season came to an end in the Class AA state tournament on Saturday.
NCA won the opening round game, beating Glenbrook 11-7, before falling to Centreville 10-6 and Claiborne 8-2.
NCA finishes the season with a 13-17-1 record under first-year coach Kelly Alderman.
NCA 11, Glenbrook 7
The Lady Generals used a pair of four-run innings to take four-run win in the opening round of the Class AA state tournament on Saturday.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning and NCA added one in the second to go up 3-2. Glenbrook went ahead with two runs in the top of the fourth, before NCA scored four in the fourth and fifth innings to take an 11-5 lead. Glenbrook scored two in the sixth for the final margin.
Lilly Hollingsworth was 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Addie Bergeron was also 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sydnee Cosgrove was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Belle Hollingsworth was 2-for-4, while Ashlyn Mathis was 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Lilly Hollingsworth pitched all seven innings and gave up seven unearned runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Centreville 10, NCA 6
The Lady Tigers broke open a tie game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a win over the Lady Generals on Saturday.
NCA scored three in the top of the first before Centreville answered with a pair of three-run innings to take a 6-3 lead. After three scoreless innings, NCA scored three in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 6-6. But Centreville answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.
NCA had eight hits in the game, led by Sydnee Cosgrove who was 2-for-3. Cayden Alexander doubled and drove in two runs while Ashlyn Mathis also doubled and scored a run. Adriane Luke, Macie Woodham, Belle Hollingsworth and Lilly Hollingworth each singled and scored a run.
Lilly Hollingsworth pitched six innings and gave up 10 runs, only four earned, on 11 hits while striking out one.
Claiborne 8, NCA 2
The Lady Generals’ season came to an end as Claiborne took a six-run win on Wednesday.
With the score tied at 1-1 after two innings, Claiborne scored four in the third and two in the fourth to take control of the game. NCA added another run in the sixth.
NCA had just three hits. Adriane Luke doubled while Lilly Hollingsworth tripled and Ashlyn Mathis singled.
Lilly Hollingsworth started and pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs while Sydnee Cosgrove pitched the final 3 2/3 innings and gave up just one run on one hit.
