SCOOBA — East Mississippi Community College’s graduated student-athlete Lilly Burton have been tabbed as the school’s 2019-20 recipients of the David M. Halbrook Award for academic excellence.
Burton, a Union High School product, played two softball seasons for Coach Austin McNair’s EMCC Lady Lions. With a 4.0 grade point average in secondary education, Burton was a 24-game starter as an EMCC freshman in 2019. She was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and was on the service committee. Burton is currently attending Mississippi State University.
She was previously a recipient of an NJCAA Academic Award as a first-team honoree this past year for having 4.0 grade point averages during the 2019-20 school year.
The David M. Halbrook Award recognizes the efforts of individual student-athletes who excel in academics, leadership and community service. Each of Mississippi’s public, private, two-year and four-year postsecondary institutions selected a male and female student-athlete to receive the Halbrook Award recognition.
The Halbrook Awards are typically presented during the annual Mississippi Association of Colleges and Universities (MAC) Conference, but this year’s conference was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The awards program is made possible through endowments from former Mississippi Representative David M. Halbrook and his brothers, John C., James G. and J.A. Halbrook in honor of their parents, John C. and Ernestine McCall Halbrook.
