It’s been a rough week for the Generals as head coach Rob Roberts has been out with his mother in the hospital.
On Thursday, the Generals played in the Tri-County jamboree where they lost 7-0 to Central Holmes and 21-0 to Central Hinds.
After missing practice, Roberts showed up at the jamboree and found out his mother passed away shortly after getting there. He left to be with his family, leaving Tanner Smith in charge.
“We have some older guys that looked good but overall we need some work,” Smith said. “We have worked around it but we will have a long way to go. It starts with the line. We have the meat up front to move people around, that’s for sure. We are going to get there. We have a new right side from last year that wants to be good and can be. If our right side can get there, I think we will be OK.”
The Generals had some bright spots, like 56 yards rushing for Harbor Reese against Central Holmes. But the Generals committed four turnovers, including three interceptions.
“It was wet but I think conditioning had a lot to do with that the second game,” Smith said. “That other team was fresh and that’s going to happen in something like this. We were tired but you can bet we are going to fix that on Monday.”
The Generals will open the season on the road as they travel to Louisville to take on Winston Academy, a team they lost 14-0 to last year.
“I expect a hard-hitting game,” Roberts said. “They have a new coach and I really don’t know a lot about them. We exchanged films but you really can’t tell a lot by their film. I don’t know what they were doing in their jamboree. But I know it was a good hard-hitting game last year.”
