As we inch closer and closer to Thanksgiving, the Mississippi State University Extension Office in Newton County is over the midway point of an annual project that provides essential items to those in need.
Project Backpack is a community service project asking for donations of new or gently used backpacks that are filled with toiletries or other helpful items, which are then given to individuals living in community-based residential housing.
Extension Agent Katrina McCalphia said that the response with the project has been great, but they do have a need for more items to stuff in backpacks.
“The community has always produced for this project tremendously through our churches and individuals,” said McCalphia. “Everything is going awesome! We recently received a large donation of empty backpacks, so we could use some donations of toiletry items to stuff those backpacks with.”
With food or drinks of any kind not being allowed, suggested toiletries and items include deodorant/antiperspirant, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, hand sanitizer, hand lotion, bar soap, shampoo/conditioner, hair accessories, shaving cream, safety shaving razors, lip balm, come/hairbrush, first aid supplies, socks, gloves, and stocking cap/hat.
Donations can be dropped off at the Extension Office up to Dec. 1. They ask that bags and toiletries are sanitized before being dropped off. The Newton County Extension Office is located at 65 7th Street in Decatur, and is open Monday-Friday, from 8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.
