Gasoline prices in Mississippi have fallen slightly, bringing relief to drivers as the holiday season gets underway. According to GasBuddy's latest survey of 2,014 stations across the state, the average price per gallon dropped by 2.0 cents in the past week, landing at $2.55 as of Monday. This marks a decrease of 5.5 cents from a month ago and a notable 14.9 cents from the same time last year.
The cheapest gas price in Mississippi on Sunday was reported at $2.25 per gallon, while the highest was $3.24, creating a 99-cent gap between the lowest and highest prices in the state. Nationally, the average gas price is $3.00 per gallon, reflecting a slight drop of 0.6 cents over the past week. Diesel prices, however, have risen by 1.1 cents nationwide, reaching an average of $3.514 per gallon.
Nearby areas reflect similar trends, with Jackson’s average price falling 3.6 cents to $2.56 and Louisiana’s average slipping slightly to $2.61. Baton Rouge held steady at $2.66 per gallon. Looking back, Mississippi’s gas prices were higher this time last year at $2.70 per gallon and even higher at $2.92 in 2022. The state’s lowest recorded average for this date in recent years was in 2020, when prices averaged $1.81 due to reduced demand during the pandemic.
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, noted that gas prices are expected to remain stable or decline modestly through the holiday shopping season. “The national average remains near the lowest levels since 2021, and over 100,000 stations nationwide are offering gas for $2.99 or less,” De Haan said. He added that upcoming OPEC+ decisions on oil production later this week could influence future prices.
