The Newton County Academy baseball team got in three games last week and came away with three wins.
Meanwhile the NCA tennis team only got in one match but squeaked out a tight 5-4 win over Laurel Christian.
Baseball
The NCA baseball team got three much-needed wins last week with two by the run rule.
On Tuesday, the Generals hammered Laurel Christian 17-1. The Generals scored four in the first and 13 in the second inning. The Generals had 10 hits as Logan Usry was 2-for-2 with a double and four RBIS while Stephen Duke was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Ty Thrash doubled, scored three runs and had three RBIs while Cooper Savell singled, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Cooper Thrash and Gaines Boyd also singled and scored two runs for NCA. Duke started and pitched one inning to pick up the win while Taylor Burt and Cooper Thrash each pitched an inning.
On Thursday, NCA took another run-rule win over the Lions with a 16-3 win. NCA scored five in the first, six in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth. NCA had 10 hits, led by Cooper Savell who was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs while Gaines Boyd was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs. Max Ferguson singled, scored three runs and had three RBIs while Logan Usry scored four runs. Ty Thrash threw all four innings for NCA and pitched up the win, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out nine.
On Friday, the Generals overcame an eight-run inning to win 11-9. NCA led 4-1 after two innings before Starkville scored eight runs in the third. NCA answered with four in the fourth and three in the sixth. Bryce Jones was 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBIs while Cooper Thrash was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Gaines Boyd was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Taylor Burt doubled and drove in two runs. Stephen Duke also singled and drove in two runs. Burt started and pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up nine runs with only one earned on one hit and three walks while striking out five. Cooper Savell pitched the next 2 1/3 innings and got the wi, allowing just one hit and four walks. Cooper Thrash pitched the next two innings and got the save as he struck out four.
Tennis
The NCA tennis team took a hard-fought 5-4 win over Laurel Christian last week.
The Generals dropped both girls singles spots, falling 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot and 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spots.
In girls doubles, Landry Parks and Maddy Smith lost 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 at the No. 1 spot while Jamie Stamper and Piper Collins won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spots.
In boys singles, Cash Weems won 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot while Noah Agent won 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
In boys doubles, Eli Herrington won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Andrew Booth and Garrett Estes won 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 spot.
