Newton Municipal School District teamed with Caddy Academy to bring some new and exciting golfing opportunities to their students. Various clinics were held throughout the day Friday, with over 50 students participating. NMSD athletic director Crandall Porter said the school would have a golf team for the 2024-25 school year. However, they would remain independent and not compete in the MHSAA the first year. The goal is to prepare to compete in the MHSAA beginning in the 2025-26 school year.
James Williams, owner of Caddy Academy based out of Little Rock, Miss., was the lead instructor for the clinic that focuses on putting, pitching, chipping, and full swings. “We want people to play golf. Go out and play a round of golf. We know golf may be a secondary sport sometimes, but we want kids playing as many sports as possible,” Williams said. “We want to make sure the kids are out here having fun and hopefully they will fall in love with this game. If you teach kids this game right here, three things are going to happen: You are going to fill their hands with the golf club, golf takes time so you are going to fill their day, and like most of the golfers who came here with me today, you are going to fill their hearts.”
