The Newton track team had a good showing at the Class 2A state track meet recently, especially from senior J’Alex Hardy.
Hardy took home two gold medals, winning the 300-meter hurdles and helping the 4x200-meter relay team.
Here’s a breakdown of how the Tigers did at the 2A state meet, which was held at Pearl:
• In the boys 200-meter dash, Newton’s KeShaun Covington finished second with a time of 23.25, second to Thaddeus Latham of Northside, who finished with a time of 22.66.
• In the boys 110-meter hurdles, Rayvion Nettles finished second with a time of 17.58 while teammate J’Alex Hardy was fifth with a time of 18.79.
• In the boys 300-meter hurdles, J’Alex Hardy brought home the gold with a time of 43.08, beating out Walnut’s T.J. Colom who had a time of 44.00.
• In the boys 4x100-meter relays, Newton finished fourth with a time of 46.09. On the 4x100 team Corey Taylor, Kaleb Traxler, J’Alex Hardy and De’Anthony Darby.
• In the boys 4x200-meter relays, Newton won the event with a time of 1:34.70, beating out Collins who finished second with a time of 1:36.61. Making up the 4x200-meter relay team from Newton was J’Alex Hardy, Corey Taylor, Kaleb Traxler and De’Anthony Darby.
• In the boys 4x800-meter relays, Newton finished second with a time of 9:31.89 behind a strong St. Andrews team who was first with a time of 9:08.98. on the 4x800 team was Damion Moore, Antwon Gray, Jamarveous Reed and J’Alex Hardy.
• In the boys triple jump, J’Alex Hardy was seventh with a jump of 36 feet, 8.5 inches.

Here are the rundown of the girls results:
• In the girls 100-meter hurdles, Newton’s eighth grader Erin Ware was second with a time of 17.66, finishing behind Northside’s Reneshia Myles who had a time of 17.06.
• In the girls 300-meter hurdles, Ware was second again with a time of 51.47, finishing behind East Webster’s Nekendra Patterson who had a time of 50.03.
• In the girls 4x100-meter relays, Newton finished third with a time of 53.57, finishing behind Potts Camp and Heidelberg. On the Talia Swan, De’Asia Cox, Ja’Leah Hickmon and Jassandra Jones.
• In the 4x200-meter relays, Newton was fifth with a tie of 1:54.54. St. Patrick won the event with a time fo 1:51.37. On the 4x200 relay team was Talia Swan, De’Asia Cox, Ja’Leah Hickmon and Jassandra Jones.
• In the high jump, Ja’Leah Hickmon was second with a jump of 5 feet while Calhoun City’s Makynzy Campbell won with a jump of 5 feet, 2 inches.
• In the long jump, Ja’Leah Hickmon finished fourth with a jump of 15 feet, 7.75 inches. Mikilah Grasper of M.S. Palmer won the event with a jump of 16 feet, 4.5 inches.
• In the triple jump, Breanna Ard finished fifth with a jump of 31 feet, 1.5 inches while St. Patrick’s Leila Ransonet was first with a jump of 32 feet, 5.75 inches.
