The Newton County School District Board of Trustees met on the evening of Monday, April 14, 2025 at the Newton County High School Library to address several matters, including policy updates, financial reports, and an exciting announcement about the district’s health sciences program.
After the invocation and pledge, the board quickly approved the meeting agenda and previous minutes. Although a student scheduled for recognition was absent, board members took time to praise the school choir for their recent performance at the Loose Caboose Festival. One student in particular was applauded for both her singing talent and her accomplishments in other extracurriculars.
During the discussion and action portion of the meeting, it was noted that no bids were received for the available 16th Section land, so that item will remain open. The board then heard updates on special education policies currently being revised to align with state standards. These revisions are scheduled to be brought up for approval at the next board meeting.
Policy changes discussed at the March meeting were officially adopted. These changes mainly involved streamlining and removing duplicate student policies. The vote was unanimous.
The board also unanimously approved a set of employment-related matters, including new hires, resignations, extended contracts, and supplemental contracts. No discussion was needed, as there were no conflicts or concerns.
A highlight of the evening was the introduction of Sarah French as the district’s new financial director. She was commended for her work so far, although Superintendent Sibley presented the financial report on her behalf. The district currently has $4.6 million in cash on hand, with a total of $24 million available. As of March, 53% of the budgeted expenditures have been made, and 70% of expected revenues have been received. The current fund balance stands at 39.82%, with a projected year-end balance between 15% and 18%. These reports were also approved unanimously.
All items in the consent agenda passed without issue, covering student attendance, transfers, facility use, and fixed asset adjustments.
In a significant update, Sibley announced that students enrolled in the Health Sciences program will be able to take the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) test on campus starting next school year. The test will be administered by the students’ instructor, which drew enthusiastic support from board members.
With no further comments, the meeting adjourned unanimously.
