Union Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dale Yates is the overall winner of the 2025 First Responder of the Year. Yates has served the residents of Newton and Neshoba County for 41 years as a fire fighter with Union Fire Department and Newton Fire Department, and as a paramedic with Neshoba General Hospital.
“Dale has been a fighter for 42 years. He goes above and beyond for his community. He has trained many young firefighters and EMT’s along the way. He also loves for kids to visit the firehouse and learn about fire safety.”
“Dale has served the citizens of Newton County in many roles over the last 41 years. Dale, has always put the needs of the citizens of Newton County above himself and sometimes over the needs of his family. From fighting fire, 911 calls, rescuing cats out of trees, saving pet snakes, doing CPR on a dog, to writing grants for money for new equipment to keep the citizens safe, he does a lot behind the scenes that most people never see or realize. He takes care of all his firemen and is always a call away when they need something. He rarely goes on vacation because “someone might need his help”! He never asks for help or for anything from anyone. He never asks for recognition; he simply loves his job and the citizens of Union and Newton County! He is a hero to many! Including his grandchildren! His 13-year-old grandson, Cash, is currently wanting to follow in his footsteps. Dale is currently grooming him into becoming a first responder just like he has mean over the years! If anyone deserves this award it is Chief Dale Yates!”
Congratulation, Chief Dale Yates, and thank you for your service to our community!
