Four of the six area schools will begin division play this week while two teams will have homecoming events.
Here’s a look at this week’s games:
Clarkdale at Lake
It’s another homecoming game as the Hornets will host Clarkdale this week.
The Bulldogs are 2-3 on the season and coming off a 40-7 win over Southeast Lauderdale. Their other win was a 28-27 win over Enterprise. They have losses to Tylertown (34-0), West Lauderdale (42-16) and Forest (49-0).
“They are coming off back-to-back wins over Enterprise and Southeast Lauderdale,” Lake coach Tate Hanna said. “They have a little momentum and were a tough team last year. We still have to work on us and continue to get better on offense. I think we made a step in the right direction in the second half last week and that gave the kids a lot of confidence. We need to have a good week of practice and it’s also the first district game so that’s a big for us.”
Last year, Clarkdale beat Lake 13-6.
Eupora at Union
Union will open Division 4-2A play this week as they host Eupora on Friday night.
The Eagles are 3-2 on the season with losses to East Webster (35-6) and Water Valley (48-46). They have wins over French Camp (40-6), Okolona (24-14) and Noxapater (28-22).
“It’s been a tough season so far but all of that is over,” Union coach Jordan Wren said. “This is the one that matters. I think we are both very young and this game will be a lot like the others we have played. It will be a game of who makes the least amount of mistakes.”
Last year, Union beat Eupora 48-14.
Newton County at Northeast Lauderdale
Northeast is 2-3 on the season with wins over Pelahatchie (42-0) and Southeast Lauderdale (37-7). They have losses to Tri-County Academy (42-7), Forest (52-14) and Kemper County (45-7).
“They look very athletic on film,” County coach Bobby Bass said. “They have the same quarterback as last year and they have some good athletes. But it’s as much about us right now as it is about them.”
Last year, Newton County won 35-0.
NCA at Deer Creek
The Generals will hit the road this week for the long road trip to Deer Creek.
The Warriors are 1-4 on the season. Their lone win came against North Sunflower (42-6). They have losses to Briarfield (42-14), Tunica (46-8), Calhoun (30-24) and Desoto (42-0).
“The biggest thing it’s a district game and its on the road,” coach Stevie Nelson said. “They are very run oriented and have two really good athletes. You just don’t ever know what you are going to get on the road. We will continue to do what we do and hopefully that will be good enough.”
Last year, NCA beat Deer Creek 42-14.
Mt. Olive at Sebastopol
The Bobcats will be at home this week as they host winless Mount Olive on Friday for homecoming.
The Pirates are 0-5 on the year and have been outscored 217-14. They have losses to Puckett (37-0), Mize (49-0), Collins (48-0), Resurrection Catholic (40-14) and Lumberton (43-0).
“It’s homecoming week so we need to be focused,” coach Keith Brown said. “I want the kids to enjoy themselves at school but we have got to get better before district play starts next week.We need some momentum before we start district play.”
Last year, Sebastopol won 30-20.
Mize at Newton
Newton will try to find its first win this week as they host Mize this week.
Mize is 3-2 on the season with wins over Taylorsville (33-0), Mount Olive (49-0) and Enterprise (35-14). They have losses to Raleigh (21-14) and Wesson (20-7).
