Newton County had a busy week on the volleyball courts.
After taking two contests from Choctaw Central, Newton County played in the Oxford Tournament where they got in five contests.
On Tuesday, Newton County blanked Choctaw Central 3-0, winning 25-12, 25-19 and 25-22.
On Thursday, they repeated the effort with another 3-0 win over Choctaw Central, winning 25-12, 25-17 and 25-22.
On Saturday, Newton County played in the Oxford Tournament against some of the top volleyball schools in the state. They started out with a 2-0 win over Northwest Rankin, winning 25-18 and 25-18. The Lady Cougars then smashed St. Andrew’s 2-0, winning 25-9 and 25-8.
Against host Oxford, the Lady Cougars lost 2-1. After dropping the first set 25-18, Newton County took the second set 25-23 and lost the tiebreaker 16-14.
They bounced back and took a 2-0 win over Hartfield Academy, winning 26-24 and 25-18. They finished out with a 2-0 loss to MAIS power Madison-Ridgeland Academy, falling 2-0, losing 25-18 and 25-23.
Newton County moves to 20-4 on the season will return to play this week as they play at Northeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and play at West Lauderdale on Thursday.
Lake
The Lady Hornets also added two more wins last week.
On Tuesday, they beat Stringer 3-0, winning 25-12, 25-14 and 25-20.
On Thursday, they traveled to St. Andrew’s and won 3-1. After dropping the first set 25-20, Lake won the next three sets, winning 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17.
Lake, now 13-4 on the season, was scheduled to play at Newton on Tuesday and at Pelahatchie on Thursday in a pair of division contests.
Newton
The Lady Tigers picked up two more wins last week and improved to 10-1 on the season.
On Tuesday, Newton beat Bay Springs 3-1. They then beat Pelahatchie 3-2 in a fifth-set tiebreaker.
Newton has three matches scheduled for this week as they host Philadelphia on Monday and then host Lake on Tuesday. They will then play at Scott Central on Thursday.
Union
The Lady Yellowjackets got in two matches last week and brought home two wins.
On Tuesday, they play at Pisgah and won 3-0 and then hosted Quitman on Thursday and also won 3-0.
Union improved to 17-8 on the season and has two matches scheduled for this week. They will play at Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday and then host St. Andrew’s on Thursday.
Sebastopol
The Lady Bobcats split a pair of contests last week.
On Tuesday, Sebastopol lost 3-1 to Nanih Waiya, falling 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, and 25-14 in four sets.
On Thursday, they bounced back and took a 3-0 over McAdams.
Sebastopol is now 5-11 on the season. They will play at Noxapater on Tuesday and then at Leake County on Thursday.
