The Newton County baseball team got in three contests this past week but couldn’t pull out a win.
County lost a pair of tight games to Clarkdale, falling 2-1 and 2-0 before losing to Lake 7-3 on Saturday.
Newton County (2-4) will play Southeast Lauderdale in a mid-week series as they host the Tigers on Tuesday and hit the road on Friday. County will make the return trip to Lake on Saturday.
Clarkdale 2, Newton County 1
The Cougars didn’t give up an earned runs but three errors allowed the Bulldogs to take a tight one-run win.
The game was scoreless the first six innings before County scored in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice bunt by Landry Tolbird that scored Daultoh Barrett. Clarkdale then scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take the walkoff win.
County had just three hits as Trent Renfrow, Vance Richardson and Cade Mangum each singled. Mangum also had five stolen bases in the game.
Ethan Burton started on the mound for the Cougars and scattered two hits and three walks while striking out eight. Cooper Lewis pitched an inning and gave up two unearned runs on one hit and two walks. Trent Renfrow came in relief and pitched the last 2/3 of an inning.
Clarkdale 2, Newton County 0
The Cougars again struggled at the plate as they were shut out by the Bulldogs on Friday.
Clarkdale scored single runs in the second and fifth innings.
Clarkdale outhit County 10-4 in the contest. Cooper Lewis was 2-for-3 while Hayden Amis and Trent Renfrow each singled.
Renfrow started on the mound and pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on 10 hits and a walk while striking out seven. Amis pitched the last 2/3 of an inning and struck out two.
Lake 7, Newton County 3
The Hornets scored six runs in the seventh inning to take a four-run win over the Cougars on Saturday.
County scored one in the first, fifth and sixth and led 3-1 before Lake plated six in the seventh.
Lake outhit County 5-4 in the contest. Hayden Amis was 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs. Cooper Lewis was also 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Jayden Butler started on the mound and pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and a walk and struck out six. Cooper Lewis, Amis and Vance Richardson also pitched.
