Newton County only got in one game last week and swept a pair of games from Mendenhall to open Division 5-4A play.
The Lady Cougars held on to take a 38-36 win while the Cougars took a 69-61 win.
Newton County’s only game this week will be on Friday at Richland. The Tuesday game with Northeast Jones last week was cancelled because of weather and was rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26.
Newton County boys 69, Mendenhall 61
The Cougars used a steady offense to take an eight-point win over the Cougars on Friday to open division play.
Newton County outscored Mendenhall 18-15 in the first period while the Lady Tigers took the second period 19-18 and trailed 36-34 at the half. Newton County then pulled away and outscored Mendenhall 19-9 in the third and led 55-43. Mendenhall took the fourth period 18-14 for the final margin.
Sebastian Johnson led Newton County with 22 points while Dasan King had 15 points. Keaton Gray also had 12 points for the Cougars.
Newton County girls 38, Mendenhall 36
The Lady Cougars overcame a first-half deficit and took a two-point win over the Lady Tigers.
Mendenhall led 12-7 at the end of the first before Newton County then outscored the Lady Tigers 20-9 in the second and led 27-21 at the half. Mendenhall outscored County 10-4 in the third to tie the game at 31-31 going to the fourth. Newton County then took the fourth period 7-5 in the fourth.
Dazzle Tubby led Newton County with 12 points while Kelcei Thomas has nine points and Felicia King added six points.
