NEWTON COUNTY 5-8, PASS CHRISTIAN 3-3
The Newton County Cougars are playing some of their best baseball of the season.
The Cougars swept a pair of games from Pass Christian, winning 5-3 on Tuesday. The Cougars then won 8-3 on Sunday to finish out the series.
Newton County improves to 20-12 on the season and will face Sumrall in a third-round playoff series this week.
County 5, Pass Christian 3
The Cougars gave up just two hits and took a two-run win over the Pirates on Tuesday.
County scored three runs in the first inning and held that 3-0 lead through the first four innings. Pass Christian then scored three in the fifth to tie the game. But County answered with one in the fifth and sixth to take the win.
County outhit Pass Christian 5-2 in the contest. Haydin Amis doubled and drove in two runs while Cooper Johnson, Vance Richardson and Cooper Lewis each singled and scored. Dalton Graham also singled and drove in a run.
Ethan Burton started on the mound and pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out six. Graham pitched the last 2 1/3 innings without giving up a hit while striking out four.
County 8, Pass Christian 3
The Cougars opened up an early lead and cruised to a five-run win over the Pirates on a game started on Friday and finished on Sunday.
County scored four runs in the top of the first and three in the second and led 7-0. Pass scored single runs in the third, sixth and seventh while County scored one in the fourth for the final margin.
Pass actually outhit County 11-9 in the contest. Hayden Amis was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while Cooper Lewis was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Vance Richardson doubled, walked twice and scored three runs. Cooper Johnson also doubled and scored a run.
Trent Renfrow started on the mound and pitched 6 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on 11 hits while striking out seven.
