SOFTBALL: NEWTON COUNTY 5-2, PURVIS 4-8
The Newton County softball team saw its 17-game win streak come to an end this past week.
The Lady Cougars opened up the Class 4A playoffs with a 5-4 win over Purvis on Friday. After Saturday’s game was rained out, Purvis took game 2 of the series 8-2 on Monday night.
Newton County moves to 23-3 on the season and was scheduled to host Purvis on Tuesday in the series finale.
Newton County 5, Purvis 4
The Lady Cougars scored the winning run on a passed ball and took a walk-off win over the Lady Tornadoes on Friday.
Newton County scored three runs in the first while Purvis scoring single runs in the top of the second and third. County added a run in the bottom of the third and led 4-2. After two scoreless innings, Purvis scored two in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. County then scored in the bottom of the seventh to take the win.
Purvis outhit County 11-8 in the contest. Maeli Ben was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Z Bell was 2-for-3 with a double while Shae Jimmie and Mary Preston Williams each tripled.
Mandarie Leach pitched all seven innings for the Lady Cougars and picked up the win, giving up four runs on 11 hits.
Purvis 8, Newton County 2
The Lady Tornadoes gradually pulled away from the Lady Cougars to take game two of the series on Monday.
Each team scored a run in the second while Purvis added two in the third and fourth to go ahead 5-1. Each team scored one in the fifth while Purvis finished with two in the sixth for the final margin.
Purvis outhit County 9-5 in the contest. Brelie Phillips doubled and drove in a run while Shae Jimmie walked twice and singled. Lexi Addy also singled drove in a run.
