The Union basketball teams had a busy week but came away with just one win in three games.
Union opened the week with county rival Newton County, falling 50-41 in the girls’ game and 65-50 in the boys’ game.
At the Mize Tournament on Thursday, the Union girls fell 47-43 to Taylorsville in overtime while the boys fell 50-39 to Taylorsville as well.
On Saturday, the Union girls beat Mize 44-28 while the Yellowjackets beat Raleigh 67-11.
Union was scheduled to play in the Lamar School Tournament this week. The Union boys will play Southern Choctaw Academy while the Union girls will play Columbia Academy on Monday. On Tuesday, Union will play Lamar, starting at 6:30 p.m. with the girls and 7:45 p.m. with the boys.
Union girls 44, Mize 28
The Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Bulldogs in every period and took a 16-point win.
Union led 6-3 at the end of the first and then outscored Mize 11-7 in the second period to lead 17-10 at the half. Union continued to extend its lead as they outscored Mize 14-13 in the third and 11-5 in the fourth.
Kylee Madden led Union with 13 points and six steals while Gracyn Tillman had 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Anna Shaw had nine points, seven rebound and two blocks while Rymia Craft had 16 rebounds to go with five points and two steals.
Union boys 67, Raleigh 11
The Yellowjackets had little trouble with the Lions as they took a 56-point win at the Mize Tournament on Saturday.
Union jumped out to a 23-4 lead in the first period and outscored the Lions 18-2 in the second to lead 41-6. Union continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Raleigh 11-3 in the third and 15-2 in the fourth.
Mason Jones led Union with 12 points while Michael Buffington had 11 points. Kamani Townsend had eight points while Johannes Hellman, Keon Hutchins and Kamarion Rushing each had six points apiece.
Taylorsville girls 47, Union 43
The Lady Yellowjackets dropped a second contest this week as they fell in overtime to the Lady Tartars at the Mize Tournament.
The game was tied at 37-37 at the end of regulation but the Lady Tartars outscored the Lady Yellowjackets 10-6 in the extra period to take the win.
Kylee Madden led Union with 17 points, four rebounds and two steals. Gracyn Tillman had 12 points while Anna Shaw had seven points and four blocks. Rymia Coat had five points, five rebounds and two steals.
Taylorsville boys 50, Union 39
The Tartars built a first-half lead and held on to take an 11-point win over the Yellowjackets.
Taylorsville led 10-4 at the end of the first and then outscored Union 18-14 in the second to lead 28-18 at the half. The Tartars took the third period 11-7 while Union outscored Taylorsville 14-11 in the fourth for the final margin.
Michael Buffington led Union with 13 points while U’Darrian Hickman had 11 points.
