Both the Lake softball and baseball teams advanced in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs last week.
The Hornets hammered Richton in two games, winning 14-1 and 18-5 while the softball team beat Heidelberg 20-0 and 19-0.
The Hornets improve to 25-5 on the season and will play Pisgah win second-round action this week.
The Lady Hornets, now 15-11 on the season, will take on Puckett in second-round action this week. Game 1 is set for Thursday at Puckett while Game 2 would be Friday with the if-necessary game set for Saturday at Puckett.
Baseball
The Lake Hornets added three more wins to their total last week. The Hornets ended the regular season with an 8-7 win over Southeast Lauderdale and then took two games from Richton in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs, winning 14-1 and 18-5.

On Tuesday, Lake wrapped up the regular season with an 8-7 win over Southeast Lauderdale with a walk-off single from Wes Nester. Lake trailed 5-1 after two innings while the Hornets scored two in the third and three in the fifth to tie the game at 6-6. Each team scored one in the seventh while Lake walked the game off in the bottom of the eighth. Lake had 13 hits in the contest, led by J.D. Gibson who was 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored. Nester was 2-for-5 with two RBIs while Kasen Tune was 2-for-5 and scored two runs. Tune started on the mound and pitched two innings, giving up five unearned runs on three hits and three walks. Wyatt Bell pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on four hits while striking out four. Nester came in and got the last four outs to get the win.
The Hornets opened the Class 2A playoffs on Friday with a 14-1 win over Richton. Lake scored five in the first, six in the second and three in the third. The Hornets banged out 10 hits and took advantage of five errors and four walks J.D. Gibson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs while Wes Nester was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Aiden Dilley and Hank Geter each had two singles while Trey Gray and Andrew Posey each scored twice. Kasen Tune pitched all fur innings and gave up one run on three hits to get the win.
The Hornets finished of the Rebels on Saturday with an 18-5 win. Lake scored five in the third and fourth and finished with seven in the fifth. Lake had 14 hits and drew seven walks. Trey Gray was 3-for-5 with three runs scored while J.D. Gibson was 3-fro-4 with a double and three RBIs. Kasen Tune was 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Wes Nester tripled and scored four runs while Andrew Posey singled and had four RBIs. Wyatt Bell was 2-for-3 while Griffin Boles singled and had three RBIs. Bell pitched all five innings and gave up five runs with just one earned on two hits and two walks to get the win.

Lake won the opening game 20-0 with just three hits as they took advantage of 15 walks and six hit batters. Kinsley Woods tripled, scored three runs and had three RBIs. Adyson McKnight also singled and scored three runs while Amaure’i Jones walked three times and scored three times. Alyssa Sockey, Lydaysha Thames, Daelyn Earls, Alaina Alford and Ceely Graham each scored twice. Graham pitched both innings and gave up one hit and struck out four.
Lake took the second game on Thursday 19-0 and had 10 hits and drew 10 walks. Lake scored 18 in the first and one in the second. Kinsley Woods was 2-for-2 with a triple, three runs scored and four RBIs while Amaure’i Jones was 2-for-3 with a home run nd five RBIs. Adyson McKnight also doubled and scored two runs while Alyssa Sockey singled and scored three runs. Ceely Graham pitched all three innings and gave up two hits while striking out seven.
