A subject of interest to me, and I believe might be to other Unionites:
I have tried yoga classes in the past and felt the benefits in my body with the stretching, posing, and relaxation. Although I was not able to do as well as some others in the class who were younger and lither, most days I managed to keep up. Or almost. I have been looking for a Christian-based yoga-type program ever since I left the last program.
I read with interest the article in the Aug. 2 Newton County Appeal about the new Wellness Studio opening in downtown Newton. I was not able to attend the open house on Aug. 10 at Hunky Dory Wellness Studio, but I called Kathy Stephens for information, left her a message and she graciously called me back.
There are chair exercises scheduled for seniors, Hatha Yoga classes for women, and separate ones for men. Kathy plans to add programs for children, who can also benefit from yoga. There is also a juice bar. Kathy believes in teaching the healthy lifestyle in addition to yoga.
Kathy is a certified yoga instructor using the teachings of YogaFaith, an organization that teaches yoga with a Christian foundation. The classes are the same relaxing environment as regular yoga, but there is soft Christian music, instead of the mystical Eastern instrumentals. The emphasis is not placed on the eastern Sanskrit phrases as in most yoga programs, although the poses and their names are the same as regular yoga.
For me, the Christian aspect makes it more inviting than other yoga programs. You may feel the same interest. If so, Kathy can be reached at 601-513-2686. The class fee of $8 per session is paid when you arrive for class, but there are several pages of paperwork to be read before starting. The studio is at 112 Fourth Street in Newton. If you call Kathy and do not get an answer, she will return your call if you leave call back information.
The mens night at Redeemer Baptist Church will be the second Saturday of September, since the first Saturday is Labor Day weekend.
There will be no meeting of the Newton/Neshoba Writers Guild Chapter in September, also because of the Labor Day weekend.
May the Lord bless you all this week and remain with you until we meet here next week.
