The unemployment rate for Newton County reached 3.3 percent in December 2022, which is the lowest unemployment rate for Newton County since the series started in 1990 according to the Mississippi Department of Employment Security. The rate decreased 0.6 percent from the November rate, 3.9 percent.
The number of unemployed residents in Newton County was 270, which is also the fewest for the county since 1990.
Newton County tied for the 21st lowest unemployment rate in the state with 4 other counties.
The unemployment rate yearly average for Newton County in 2022 was 4.0 percent, decreasing from 5.4 percent a year ago.
Mississippi’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for December 2022 was 4.0 percent, increasing 0.1 percent from November. When compared to one year ago, the rate has decreased seven-tenths of a percentage point from 4.7 percent, as reported in December 2021.
According to Mary Willoughby, Chief Economist with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, the reported unemployment numbers is good news. “The unemployment rates for Newton County and throughout the state of Mississippi were low in 2022, “Willoughby said. “And this indicates a strong economy.”
