The Newton County Academy fast-pitch softball team got the season kicked off this past weekend.
The Lady Generals ran into a pair of larger schools, losing 8-1 to Presbyterian Christians and 10-0 to East Rankin.
The Lady Generals will play in the East Central Tournament on Saturday and will host Leake Academy on Monday, Aug. 5 and then the Meridian Flyers on Thursday, Aug. 8. They will finish the week at the Tri-County Tournament in Clinton on Saturday.
Presbyterian Christian 8, NCA 1
The Lady Bobcats scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break open a close game on Saturday.
PCS scored three runs in the second while NCA scored its lone run in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 3-1 after five. But PCS scored five runs in the sixth to take the win.
NCA had five hits but committed four errors, giving up just one earned run.
Sydnee Cosgrove was 2-for-2 and scored a run while Adriane Luke singled and drove in a run. Maggie Vance and MC Kelly had NCA’s other hits.
Cosgrove pitched 5 2/3 innings for NCA and gave up eight hits while giving up just one earned run on eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
East Rankin 10, NCA 0
The Lady Generals didn’t have a hit against the Lady Patriots on Saturday.
East Rankin scored three in the first, two in the second, one in the third and fifth while finishing with three in the sixth.
Sophia Munn started and pitched three innings, giving up six runs on nine hits and four walks. Sydnee Cosgrove pitched one scoreless inning while MC Kelly pitched the last two innings and gave up four runs on six hits for the final margin.
