Ever since Maurice Bowie took over at Lake, he’s had to play second fiddle to the Newton Lady Tigers.
That came to an end on Tuesday night when the Lady Hornets beat rival Newton 54-35 to take control of the Division 5-2A race.
Lake followed that win up with a 42-29 over Nanih Waiya to remain unbeaten in division play.
The Hornets lost two games last week, falling 70-24 to Newton but bouncing back to beat Nanih Waiya 35-24.
Lake has another pair of big division games this week as they are scheduled to host Philadelphia on Tuesday and Kemper County on Friday.
Lake girls 54, Newton 35
The Lady Hornets overcame an early deficit and used a big second period to take a big win over Newton on Tuesday.
Newton started strong and led 15-11 at the end of the first period. But Lake responded with a huge second period and outscored Newton 21-2 to take a 32-17 lead at the half. Lake continued to extend the lead in the second half as they outscored Newton 14-12 in the third and 8-6 in the fourth to take the win.
Laneisha Palm led Lake with 15 points while Tra’Shaylah Wilson and Kaliauna Jones each had eight points. Brooklyn Harris and D’Nara Barton each had six points apiece.
Zia Shields led Newton with 21 points while Mariana Thomas had seven points.
Lake girls 42, Nanih Waiya 29
The Lady Hornets used a steady offense to take a 13-point win over the Lady Warriors on Friday night to stay unbeaten in division play.
Lake scored 21 points in each half as they led 21-14 at the end of the first half. Lake then outscored Nanih Waiya 21-15 in the second half to take the win.
D’Nara Barton led Lake with 12 points while Laneisha Palm had 10 points. Tra’Shaylah Wilson had nine points while Brooklyn Harris had six points and Alicia Oliphant had five points.
Lake boys 35, Nanih Waiya 24
The Hornets were able to overcome a first-half deficit and finish strong to take an 11-point win over the Warriors on Friday.
Nanih Waiya jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first period while Lake outscored the Warriors 8-4 in the second to cut the lead to 19-15. Lake then outscored Nanih Waiya 8-5 in the third to cut the lead to 24-23 going to the fourth. Lake then outscored Nanih Waiya 12-0 in the fourth to take the win.
