The Newton basketball teams stepped up in class last week.
The Tigers beat Laurel 68-53 before losing 57-54 to Quitman and 72-62 to Northwest Rankin.
The Lady Tigers lost 55-45 to Laurel and 65-54 to Quitman.
Newton has three games scheduled this week as they are scheduled to travel to Nanih Waiya on Tuesday, to Heidelberg on Thursday and to Bay Springs on Friday.
Newton boys 68, Laurel 53
The Tigers used a big second period to pull away and take a 15-point win over the Tornadoes last week.
Newton led 11-9 at the end of the first but then exploded and outscored Laurel 25-9 in the second and led 36-18 at the half. Laurel outscored Newton 21-16 in the third while the Tigers took the fourth period 16-14.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with a season-high 19 points while Kezarrian Wash had 17 points. Justin Thompson had eight points while Isaiah Johnson had six points and Kaleb Traxler added five points.
Laurel girls 55, Newton 45
The Lady Tornadoes outscored the Lady Tigers in every period and took a hard-fought 10-point win.
Laurel led 9-6 at the end of the first and outscored Newton 16-12 in the second to lead 25-18 at the half. Laurel then outscored Newton 14-12 in the third and 16-15 in the fourth to take the win,
Zia Shields led Newton with 27 points while Erin Ware had eight points.
Quitman boys 57, Newton 54
The Tigers were unable to hold onto a big lead as the Panthers rallied to take a three-point win over the Tigers.
Quitman led 13-9 at the end of the first period before Newton put together a big second period and outscored the Panthers 22-8 in the second to lead 31-21 at the half. Quitman took the third period 12-10 as Newton led 41-33 going to the fourth. Quitman then outscored Newton 24-13 in the fourth to take the win.
Cahden Thompson led Newton with 10 points while Justin Thompson had nine points. Rayvion Nettles and Tyreke Snow each had eight points while Kezarrian Wash had seven points.
Quitman girls 65, Newton 54
The Lady Tigers fell behind early and dropped an 11-point decision to the Lady Panthers.
Quitman led 16-14 at the end of the first and then outscored Newton 16-7 in the second to take a 32-21 advantage into the half. Newton outscored Quitman 17-12 in the third to cut the lead to 44-38 but the Lady Panthers used a 21-16 advantage in the fourth to take the win.
Zia Shields led Newton with 31 points while Jade Qualls had 11 points. Erin Ware added eight points and Marianna Thames had six points.
Northwest Rankin boys 72, Newton 62
The Class 6A Cougars pulled away in the third and took a 10-point win over the Tigers on Saturday at Meridian.
Newton led 17-12 at the end of the first before Northwest Rankin outscored the Tigers 21-17 in the second to cut the lead to 34-33 at the half. Northwest Rankin outscored Newton 17-8 in the third and took a 50-42 lead going to the fourth. Northwest outscored Newton 22-20 in the fourth for the final margin.
Rayvion Nettles led Newton with 19 points while Darrius Thames had 15 points. Cayden Thompson had 12 points while Isaiah Johnson hd eight points. Kezarrian Wash and Tyreke Snow each had six points apiece.
