The Newton Tigers picked up two more wins this week on the hardwood, although they had their hands full at times.
The Tigers opened 2022 with an easy 68-41 win over Scott Central. Then on Tuesday, the Tigers had to overcome a first-half deficit and beat Grace Christian Academy of Ocean Springs 54-46.
Newton will return to action this week as they dive into division play. Newton will host Lake on Tuesday and then will host Kemper County on Friday.
Newton boys 54, Grace Baptist Academy 46
The Tigers overcame a first-half deficit and pulled away in the second half to take an eight-point win over the Eagles on Tuesday.
Newton led 14-13 at the end of the first but Grace Baptist outscored the Tigers 15-7 in the second to take a 28-21 lead at the half. But Newton then outscored Grace Baptist 17-8 in the third to take 38-36 lead into the fourth period. Newton finished by outscoring Grace 16-10 in the fourth to take the win.
Newton used a balanced scoring attack to take the win as they were led by Tyreke Snow with 11 points. Rayvion Nettles had nine points while Justin Thompson had eight points. Melvin Thames and Kezarrian Wash had six points apiece.
Newton boys 68, Scott Central 41
The Tigers outscored the Rebels in every period as they cruised to a 27-point win on Monday at the Newton Tournament.
Newton led 14-6 at the end of the first period and then outscored Scott Central 21-13 in the second to lead 35-19 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the second half as they outscored Scott Central 18-15 in the third and 15-7 in the fourth to take the win.
Justin Thompson led Newton with 12 points while Tyreke Snow had 10 points. Darrius Thames had nine points while Cayden Thompson added seven points. Kezarrian Wash and Melvin Smith each had five points apiece.
Noxubee County girls 46, Newton 40
Noxubee pulled away in the middle two periods and took a frantic six-point win over Newton on Tuesday.
Noxubee led 4-3 at the end of the first and then outscored Newton 14-9 in the second to lead 18-12 at the half. Noxubee then outscored Newton 19-16 in the third and led 37-28 going to the fourth. Newton took the fourth 11-9 for the final margin.
Zia Shields led Newton with 16 points while Ti’Azla Gray had six points.
Germantown girls 43, Newton 21
The Lady Mavericks dominated the first three periods and took a 22-point win over the Tigers on Saturday at the Meridian Tournament.
Germantown started fast as they led 17-5 at the end of the first and then outscored Newton 11-5 in the second to lead 28-10 at the half. The Lady Mavericks outscored the Lady Tigers 11-6 in the third to take a 39-16 lead into the fourth. Newton took the fourth period 5-4 for the final margin.
Zia Shields led Newton with 11 points.
