The Newton Tigers moved to 4-0 in Division 5-2A play with a win over rival Philadelphia on Friday in their only action of the week.
The Tigers jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the first period and cruised to a 53-36 win over the Tornadoes on Friday night.
The Lady Tigers also picked up a win as they beat the Lady Tornadoes 58-38.
Newton will return to action this week with a pair of division road games as they will travel to Kemper County on Tuesday and then travel to Lake on Friday.
Newton boys 53, Philadelphia 36
The Tigers stayed unbeaten in division play as they started fast to take a 17-point win over the Tornadoes on Friday.
Newton started fast as they jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the first period. Newton then outscored Philly 11-10 in the second and led 29-13 at the half. Philadelphia bounced back and outscored Newton 15-11 in the third to cut the lead to 40-28 going to the fourth. But Newton outscored Philadelphia 13-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Tyreke Snow led a balanced scoring attack with nine points while Rayvion Nettles had eight points including two dunks. Darrius Thames and Cahden Thompson each had seven points apiece while Kezarrian Wash and Isaiah Johnson each had six points apiece.
Newton girls 58, Philadelphia 38
The Lady Tigers started strong in both halves and used that momentum to take a 20-point win over the Lady Tornadoes on Friday.
Newton jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first period before Philadelphia answered and outscored the Lady Tigers 16-10 in the second to cut the lead to 28-22. Newton then put the game away in the third as they outscored Philly 14-4 to take a 42-26 lead into the fourth. Newton finished by outscoring Philadelphia 16-12 to take the win.
Zia Shields led Newton with 19 points while Janiah McDonald had 13 points. Sommer Jordan had nine points while Erin Ware added seven points.
