The Newton County tennis teams saw their season come to an end last week at the Class 4A state tennis tournament in Oxford.
The Newton County mixed doubles team lost in the finals while the boys and girls doubles teams lost in the semifinals.
In mixed doubles, Tate Baucum and Josie Tullos made the finals before falling 6-5, 6-4 to New Albany. Baucum and Tullos won their first-round match, beating North Pike 6-0, 6-1. In the quarterfinals, Tullos and Baucum beat Pontotoc 6-2, 6-0 and then beat West Lauderdale 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the finals.
In girls singles, Brenah Flint won her first-round match, beating Greenwood 6-2, 6-4. Flint fell in the second round, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Corinth.
In boys doubles, Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock fell just short of the championship series. Cooley and Tadlock won the opening round with ease, beating Purvis 6-0, 6-0. In the quarterfinals, Cooley and Tadlock beat North Pike 6-3, 6-3. In the semifinals, Cooley and Tadlock lost to New Albany 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 in a third-set tiebreaker.
In girls doubles, Newton County also fell short in the semifinals in a third-set tiebreaker. In the opening round, Maggie Bounds and Aleah McMullan beat Sumrall 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Bounds and McMullan beat Stone County 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinals, Bounds and McMullan lost a tough match, falling 6-4, 5-7, 14-12.
