It was a busy week for the Newton County tennis team with five matches.
The Cougars went 2-3 on the week as they beat Division 5-4A foes Northeast Jones 4-3 and Richland 6-1.
On Friday and Saturday, County played at Oxford and Lost to Hernando 5-2, Lafayette County 4-3 and Oxford 7-0.
Newton County moves to 8-5 on the season and has a full week scheduled. They will host Mendenhall on Tuesday and then host the Division 5-4A Tournament at East Central on Wednesday. On Friday, they will play Jackson Academy at the Northwest Rankin Tournament. On Saturday, they will play Alcorn Central and Saltillo at the Northwest Rankin Tournament.
County 4, Northeast Jones 3
The Cougars took a tight one-match win over division foe Northeast Jones on Monday in a Division 5-4A contest.
Newton County split the singles play as Tate Baucum lost 6-3, 6-0 on the boys side and Josie Tullos won 6-0, 6-1 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Newton County split the points as Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Braiden Estes and Keaton Gray lost 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, County split again as Maggie Bounds and Aleah McMullan won 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Brenah Flint and Alyssa McMullan lost 6-4, 1-6, 11-9.
In mixed doubles, Donald Blake and Katelyn Wall won 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 in a third-set tiebreaker.
County 6, Richland 1
The Cougars cruised to an easy win over the Rangers on Tuesday to improve to 3-0 in division 5-4A play.
In singles, Tate Baucum won 6-2, 6-1 on the boys side while Josie Tullos won 6-1, 6-1 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock won 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot while Keaton Gray and Caden Chaney lost 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Newton County took both points as Maggie Bounds and Aleah McMullan won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Brenah Flint and Alyssa McMullan won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Donald Blake and Katelyn Wall won 6-1, 6-4.
Hernando 5, County 2
The Cougars won both girls doubles points but dropped a decision to Hernando on Friday in Oxford.
In singles, County lost two tight matches as Tate Baucum lost 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 on the boys side. while Josie Tullos lost 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock lost 6-7 (0), 6-7 (3) at the No. 1 spot while Braiden Estes and Caden Chaney lost 6-0, 6-0.
In girls doubles, Maggie Bounds and Aleah McMullan won 6-4, 7-6 (2) at the No. 1 spot while Brenah Flint and Alyssa McMullan won 3-6, 6-0, 10-5.
In mixed doubles, Donald Blake and Katelyn Wall lost 6-0, 6-3.
Lafayette County 4, Newton County 3
The Cougars lost a tight contest to Lafayette County on Saturday.
In singles, Tate Baucum won 6-2, 6-3 on the boys side while Josie Tullos lost 6-3, 6-4 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Lafayette took both points as Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock lost 6-12, 6-4 while Braiden Estes and Caden Chaney lost 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Maggie Bounds and Aleah McMullan won 6-3, 6-7 (6), 11-9 at the No. 1 spot while Brenah Flint an Alyssa McMullan won 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
In mixed doubles, Donald Blake and Katelyn Wall lost 6-0, 6-2.
Oxford 7, County 0
In their second match of the day, County lost to Class 5A power Oxford.
In singles, Donald Blake lost 6-2, 6-1 on the boys side while Brenah Flint lost 6-1, 6-1 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock lost 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot while Braiden Estes and Caden Chaney lost 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
