The Newton County tennis team picked up two playoff wins this past week and are one step away from playing for another state championship.
Newton County opened up with a 6-1 over Pass Christian and then beat Sumrall 7-0.
Newton County improves to 12-7 on the season and advances to the Class 4A South State finals on Tuesday at Stone County.

The Cougars cruised to a first-round win last week, dropping just one match.
In singles, Tate Baucum lost by default on the boys side while Josie Tullos won 6-0, 6-1 on the girls side.
In boys doubles, Cade Cooley and Cole Tadlock won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Keaton Gray and Caden Chaney won 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls doubles, Maggie Bounds and Aleah McMullan won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Brenah Flint and Alyssa McMullan won 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot.
In mixed doubles, Donald Blake and Katelyn Wall won 6-3, 6-0.

The Cougars swept Sumrall in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs on Friday.
