Several members of the American Legion's Central Area, District 5, were recognized during the recent state convention for their outstanding service and leadership.
Charles Massey of Hickory Post 173 was sworn in as Central Area Vice Commander, alongside David Bryan of Carthage Post 168, who will serve on the District 5 Executive Committee. Both were honored to be sworn in by National Vice Commander Joseph “Joe” Lysaught of South Carolina, a longtime leader in the American Legion.
Tim Gibbs of Philadelphia Post 138, serving as Central Area Commander, accepted a plaque from State Commander David Benson after the Central Area earned first place in the state for the third consecutive year.
Vice Commander Johnny Reeves was unable to attend due to back surgery but was recognized in spirit for his continued dedication—his signature “whoop whoop” cheer was missed during the celebration.
The convention also marked a leadership transition as outgoing State Commander David Benson welcomed Jon Mark Herrington, of Hattiesburg Post 24, as the incoming State Commander for the 2025–2026 term.
