Hundreds of mourners came out to pay their respects to former Newton County Appeal columnist and community fixture Sue Addy on Friday and Saturday. Addy passed away on Thursday after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.
She was 72.
Visitation was held on Friday and Saturday morning at Stephens Funeral Home. The funeral was at 11 a.m. Saturday at her church, First Baptist Church of Union, and burial was at Union City Cemetery.
Addy graduated from Mississippi College with a degree in education which she used to teach in the Union Public School District for 19 years. She also helped run the family business, Marshall Lewis Department Store, alongside her late husband, Larry, for 20 years.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Union, where she was a Sunday school teacher, children’s church coordinator and website coordinator.
She was also heavily involved with Union’s Present Day Club, was in the Mississippi Federation of Women’s Clubs on the state level, WMU director, nursing home ministries coordinator and wrote the weekly Union Community News column for the Appeal for more than four years. Addy was named as the Union Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year in 2015.
Former Union Appeal publisher Jack Tannehill said Addy’s loss will be felt throughout the community.
“When it came to Union, Sue was all in, all of the time. It didn’t matter whether it was a civic group, social organization, hers or any other church, and especially individual citizens, Sue was always ready with her time,
talent and treasure to help at any level,” Tannehill said. “For all of the years and years she was here, she never hesitated to take on the toughest challenges or backed away from a project that she thought would be beneficial to our community. It was always a privilege and a pleasure to work with someone that dedicated who always put the needs of others above her own.”
Addy’s columns always contained a wealth of news about Union residents’ activities including family trips and class reunions, and also featured her own musings about her garden and her observations about the area’s natural beauty and the town’s rich history.
Her final column was published in the May 17 edition.
“It has been a thrill to learn your news, replay our past and support our town,” she wrote. years. Addy was named as the Union Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year in 2015.
