This Saturday, Lazy Acres Plantation will kick off its fall schedule with what is being touted as one of its biggest events ever.
The central region of the Mississippi Army National Guard and CIS Medical Group will both host their family days at the plantation as it kicks off its “Pumpkin Patch” season which will last through Oct. 29.
Lazy Acres owner Michael May said the idea began to take shape in the past several months.
“The Army National Guard approached us over the summer about possibly doing their family day out here, and after talking with them we decided to mention to them that we could put the Mississippi National Guard logo in our corn maze, and they were very excited about that,” May said.
Last year’s corn maze was shaped in the design of Snoopy to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Peanuts Halloween classic “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” This year, the maze’s design will honor the state’s National Guardsmen. The maze was again designed by Utah-based The Maize Company and was cut by May and his crew.
May said the logo and this Saturday’s event will have a special meaning for him and his family.
“We’re excited about it because I was in the Air National Guard, and my son-in-law is in the Army National Guard, so we covered both of them with this year’s corn maze,” May said. “It will hopefully be our biggest opening day ever. We’re excited about it and we’re just praying for good weather.”
More than 1,800 visitors are expected to the plantation on Saturday, and the event will start around 9 a.m.
Saturday’s event will also kickoff a month long schedule of events at the farm, which will include a birthday party celebration for the farm’s new mascot Banjo on Sunday, Oct. 8, a touch-tractor event on Saturday, Oct. 14, and the cystic fibrosis walk and 5K on Saturday, Oct. 21 that will also feature Girls Scout Day and a blood drive honoring Matthew Sistrunk.
There will also be events each weekend on Saturdays and Sundays including the annual pig races, magic and comedy from illusionist Todd Smith and a birds of prey show.
As always, there will also be plenty of pumpkins for sale in the pumpkin patch.
