Newton Elementary first grade teacher Cindy Strickland was recently honored at the 2018 Golden Apple Teacher Award Banquet in Meridian. Mrs. Strickland was nominated by NES Gifted Education teacher, Gina Gordon, for her dedication to her students and for setting a positive example for her fellow staff members even in the midst of hardships.
Cindy is married to Kyle Strickland and is the mother of three. Her son, Bentley, was diagnosed with Hurler’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder, which requires serious medical procedures and causes her to be away from her class at times.
Her commitment to her students is evident as she facilitates instruction from home and tracks their class progress during those times she must remain with Bentley.
NMSD Superintendent Nola Bryant shared, “That is what we need, teachers that are willing to go in and make a difference no matter what it takes.”
