The Newton County basketball teams had a busy week on the hardwoods but only came away with one victory.
The Lady Cougars grabbed the only victory of the day with a 41-35 win over Morton. They also lost 70-35 to Choctaw Central and 51-43 to Lake.
The Cougars lost both contests last week, falling 59-45 to Choctaw Central and 71-48 to Morton.
Newton County will return to action on Tuesday as they host Union and will travel to Choctaw Central on Friday.
County girls 41, Morton 35
The Lady Cougars overcame a slow start and pulled away to take a six-point win over the Lady Panthers last week.
Morton led 10-2 after the first period but County outscored the Lady Panthers 11-2 in the second to lead 13-12 at the half. County then pulled away in the third period, outscoring Morton 13-9 in the third and 15-14 in the fourth to take the win.
Hannah McDougle led County with 16 points while Remini Nickey had 10 points. Taelyn Nickey and Maeli Ben each had six points apiece.
Morton boys 71, Newton County 48
The Panthers pulled away in the second half and took a 23-point win over the Cougars.
Morton led 13-11 at the end of the first and County took the second period 15-14 as the Panthers led 27-26 at the half. But Morton outscored County 20-5 in the third to lead 47-31 going to the fourth. Morton took the fourth period 24-17 for the final margin.
Xay Clark led the Cougars with 15 points while Roby Billy had 10 points and Zarius Johnson added five points.
Choctaw Central girls 70, Newton County 35
The Lady Warriors pulled away in the second quarter and cruised to a 35-point win over the Lady Cougars.
Each team scored 13 points in the first period before Choctaw outscored County 26-4 in the second to lead 39-17 at the half. Choctaw continued to build on its lead and outscored County 18-10 in the third and 23-8 in the fourth.
Taelyn Nickey and Remini Nickey each scored 10 points while Kelcei Thomas had six points.
Choctaw Central 59, County 45
The Warriors outscored the Cougars in each of the first three periods and took a 14-point win over the Cougars.
Choctaw outscored County 15-8 in the first period and 15-13 in the second to lead 30-21 at the half. Choctaw continued to pull away in the third, outscoring County 16-11 to lead 46-32 going to the fourth where each team scored 13 points.
Roby Billy led County with 17 points while Keaton Gray had 12 points. Dominic Bell had seven points while May Clark had five points.
