The final Newton County results for the Tuesday's primaries are similar to the statewide total as state tallies continue to come in tonight. The unofficial vote tally in Newton County with 100 percent of the precincts for the Democratic U.S. House District 3 primary had state Representative Michael Evans winning by 373 votes with Newton native and U.S. Navy veteran Michael Aycox finishing with 277 votes. As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, the statewide totals for both candidates was 12,580 votes (69.55 percent) for Evans and 5,508 votes (30.45 percent) for Aycox.
In the Newton County totals for the Republican U.S. House District 3 primary, Michael Guest led the way with 618 votes, with Whit Hughes second with 426 votes. Perry Parker followed with 336 votes, Morgan Dunn had 208 votes, Sally Doty had 144 votes and Bitzi Tate finished with 16 votes.Guest and Hughes are also currently the top vote getters across the district with Guest at 20,543 votes (44.43 percent) and Hughes with 10,150 votes (21.95 percent). Because no candidate got more than 50 percent of the total vote, Guest and Hughes will move on to a runoff on June 26 and the winner will face Evans in November for the seat that is being vacated by Gregg Harper.
In the Republican U.S. Senate primary, incumbent Roger Wicker is coasting to an easy victory with 80.28 percent of the Newton County vote against challenger R. Warren Boyanton. Wicker was leading even bigger statewide with 82.31 percent of the vote.
In the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, Howard Sherman led the Newton County totals with 309 votes (48.51 percent) with Omeria Scott with 133 votes (20.88 percent), and David Baria with 117 votes (18.37 percent). With 88.46 percent of the statewide precincts reporting, the race was a lot closer with Sherman holding a slight lead with 31.81 percent of the vote and Baria with 31.51 percent. Sherman and Baria will head to a runonff on June 26. Look for the final totals in next week's edition of the Appeal.
