Less than two weeks after he was arrested in the shooting of Latrina Patrick, a Lawrence man has passed away. Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said Maurice Osborne Sr. died in the early morning hours on Monday, Sept.4 at Anderson's Medical Center in Meridian due to complications with his kidney.
“He was not in our custody when he passed away. He was out on bond,” Knight said.
Knight said that Osborne had been transported to Newton's Fresenius Kidney Centers in Meridian and Newton on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of last week to receive dialysis. Early Monday, he was released on bond for medical treatment and transported to Anderson's and died soon after.
Osborne was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic assault for the shooting of Patrick on Aug. 21. According to Newton County Justice Court records, his bond was initially set at $50,000, but it had been reduced to $30,000 by Aug. 25. As of Monday, Aug. 28, Patrick was listed in stable condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Patrick has a 5-year-old child who was not injured in the incident. Knight said the charges will have to be dropped after Osborne's sudden death.
“You've got a victim but you haven't got a perpetrator, and you can't try a dead man so the charges are withdrawn,” Knight said.
