The American Legion Post 89 had good weather and a good turnout for its annual stew event.
However, this year’s event also featured a classic car show on the grounds of its historic hut on Hwy. 15 in Decatur.
“We had a good turn out for the stew today,” said Post Commander Johnny Reeves in a Facebook post Saturday night. “Big thanks to everyone that came out. Big thanks to all the volunteers that helped make it a success.”
The car show began at 11 a.m. and the food and fun continued from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
The American Legion has been doing a Brunswick stew cooking for many years as a fundraiser for the post, but this year they decided to add the car show.
Last year, the event featured vendors geared toward veterans, which included some military vehicles.
All of the proceeds raised from the event on Saturday will go toward repairs and renovations needed to help keep up the historic hut, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The building was built in the 1930s following a fire that destroyed the original hut.
In addition to this fundraiser, the American Legion rents the hut out for parties, weddings, and other community-oriented events.
