Biewer Sawmill is pleased to announce the expansion of their state-of-the-art sawmill facility located in Newton.
This $40 million facility expansion will increase sawmill production by over 100 million board feet per year.
“In order to be competitive, you have to keep up with technology and demand. There is no better place than Newton, Miss., to make this investment,” Tim Biewer, President & CEO of Biewer Lumber said in a statement. “We are proud to be part of this great community.”
The updated facility includes an expanded Wood Yard, a third Continuous Kiln, a Stacker and a third Strapper; all designed to support the addition of a second Saw Line. To accommodate the additional production capabilities this expansion will bring 30+ full-time jobs to the City of Newton.
“Projects like this are extremely important to the continued growth and prosperity of Newton County.”, stated Michael J. McGrevey, deputy director of the Mississippi Development Authority.
Mill expansion is expected to be fully completed by the fall of 2019.
Biewer began production at the end of 2016 and held its formal grand opening in April 2017. Through a MDA grant, the city of Newton was able to install a rail spur for Biewer, which was completed earlier this year. The sawmill now uses the rail spur to ship the timber to its plants in Michigan.
