The Mississippi Municipal League (MML) will hold its 2019 Mid-Winter Legislative Conference at the Hilton Jackson Tuesday, Jan. 8 - Thursday, Jan. 10. More than 600 people are expected to attend including local municipal officials from across the state, members of the legislature and state agency directors and staff.
The MML Mid-Winter Legislative Conference gives municipal officials the opportunity to network with members of the legislature early in the session. The League will provide bus transportation to the capitol Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. for the annual “MML Day at the Capitol” where MML members will have the opportunity to network with their legislators and provide important feedback on issues that are critical to municipalities.
Prior to this event, Governor Phil Bryant signed an official proclamation declaring the week of Jan. 13 – 19, 2019, as Mississippi Municipal Government Week. Municipal government is the level of government closest to most citizens and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents. During Mississippi’s Municipal Government Week, municipalities from across the state will participate in activities to showcase and celebrate cities and towns and the many services they provide.
The opening general session of the conference on Wednesday afternoon will begin with a welcome from Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba. Following his remarks, Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley will address attendees on proposed legislation that would grant electric cooperatives the authority to provide high-speed internet to rural areas in the state. Dr. L. Lavon Gray of Lavon Gray Consulting Group will wrap-up the general session with a keynote address regarding conflict resolution.
The conference will adjourn Thursday morning after the General Session Breakfast, sponsored by C Spire, which will feature updates from Mississippi State Auditor Shad White and Attorney General Jim Hood.
The mission of the Mississippi Municipal League is helping cities and towns excel. Established in 1931, MML represents 292 city, town and village governments in Mississippi. MML is also affiliated with the National League of Cities, a lobbying, legislative and legal arm representing municipalities before the U.S. Congress.
