City to hire summer workers
The City of Newton is looking for summer workers to help cut grass, pick up trash and other jobs to help out the city’s public works department.
interested high school or college student ages 15 and up are asked to apply at City Hall. Workers will work around 4 hours per day.
The city has budgeted up to $7,000 to pay summer employees.
Board needs quote on PD
radios
The Newton Board of Aldermen asked Police Chief Harvey Curry at its May 21 meeting to supply “firm” quotes for the purchase of new police radios.
Curry presented a price of $17,731.50 from Motorola for the purchase of 10 radios. However, the aldermen were planning to purchase between 3-5 to get by until the new fiscal year.
Aldermen Eric McCalphia and Romonica Evans said the price was much higher than the aldermen were previously told. They said they needed a firm price before they could proceed.
Curry said he has only one working radio that is able to communicate with other agencies.
ECCC to offer seminar on
starting small business
The East Central Community College Small Business Development Center will offer a free seminar on “First Steps-The Process of Starting a Small Business” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 10, in the Workforce Development Center, located at 52 9th St., on the ECCC campus in Decatur.
This seminar will include basic steps in starting your own business. Topics will include licenses and permits, legal forms of ownership, basic marketing concepts, lending terminology and outlining a business plan.
Ronnie Westbrook, SBDC director, will serve as facilitator.

Attorney general forum set for June 5
HATTIESBURG — The Mississippi Coast Lawyers Chapter of The Federalist Society and William Carey University will host an attorney general candidate forum at William Carey University.
The event will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, in Thomas Fine Arts Auditorium and will be moderated by retired Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Charles Pickering.
The nonpartisan forum is open to the public. Candidates will be asked to discuss topics selected by The Federalist Society organizers, which will include questions submitted by William Carey students.
All attorney general candidates were invited to participate.

UT-Martin honor roll
The outstanding academic achievements of undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee at Martin have been honored with publication of the Spring 2019 Chancellor’s Honor Rolls.
Those listed on the honor rolls include were Kyannah D. Grant, highest honors, and Kyarrah D. Grant, highest honors, both of Conehatta, and Peyton A. Cain of Hickory, high honors.
To be eligible for the Chancellor’s Honor Roll recognition at UT Martin, a student must take at least 12 hours of credit. Students can make the Chancellor’s Honor Roll with honors (3.2 through 3.49), high honors (3.5 through 3.79) or highest honors (3.8 through 4.0).
