The “Underground Railroad Re-Run” organization is planning its third annual “run” to commemorate the escape of those brave slaves who ran for freedom to states where freedom existed. After the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act, by the United Congress in 1850, it became necessary to flee into Canada, the land of the free; (which was a British Colony where slavery was illegal.)
Therefore, our commemorative this year will take us to Chatman Kent, Canada and ultimately to Niagara Falls. This group will depart from Meridian, MS on June 10th and travel by motorcycles and perhaps three or four cars. Another group of riders will leave Georgia on June 11 and will rendezvous with us in Ohio. Together we plan to arrive in Chatham-Kent on June 12th. Although, we have made two previous runs to the Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, this year (as the slaves did) we are going all the way to that land where slaves finally felt “FREE AT LAST”.
Many of the riders will come from Jackson, Decatur, Meridian, and surrounding cities in the state of Mississippi. Others will come from Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas and other southern states.
During the discussion of African American History, rarely is the Underground Railroad mentioned. We are making great attempts to correct this exclusion. Because we recognize their escapes enabled them to tell the story of the horrible burden and abuse that slave masters perpetrated upon them in America. This knowledge, provided to the world, hastened necessary actions which finally brought a measure of freedom to African Americans in the United States of American.
