The Newton County girls powerlifting team sent nine lifters to the Class 4A state meet last week.
The Lady Cougars finished second in Class 4A, finishing just behind Ripley and just ahead of Caledonia and South Pontotoc.
Newton County had two second-place finishers, three third-place finishers and three fourth-place finishers.

The Lady Cougars finished second in the state meet, finishing 13 points behind Ripley and one point ahead of Caledonia.
• In the 97-pound weight class, eighth grader Brynleigh Boatner finished third with a 435-pound total. Boatner had a 170-pound squat, a 75-pound bench press and a 190-pound dead lift.
• In the 123-pound weight class, Natalie Allen finished second with a total of 630 pounds. The senior had a 220-pound squat, a 115-pound bench press and a 295-pound dead lift.
• In the 132-pound weight class, Kalyn Clayton finished second with a total of 675 pounds. The sophomore had a 260-pound squat, a 115-pound bench press and a 300-pound dead lift. Also in the 132-pound weight class, Abagail Pippin failed to get 270 pounds on her squat and scratched.
• In the 165-pound weight class, Aleah McMullan finished fourth with a total of 665 pounds. The senior had a 255-pound squat, a 110-pound bench press and a 300-pound dead lift.
• In the 181-pound weight class, Haley Easley finished third with a total of 710 pounds. The sophomore had a 280-pound squat, a 110-pound bench press and a 320-pound dead lift.
• In the 198-pound weight class, Lexi Stevens finished fourth with a 685-pound total. The junior had a 260-pound squat, a 115-pound bench press and a 310-pound dead lift.
• In the 220-pound weight class, Mackenzie Platt finished third with a total of 845 pounds. The sophomore had a 365-pound squat, a 130-pound bench press and a 350-pound dead lift.
• In the 242-pound weight class, Abigail Gray finished fourth with a total of 765 pounds. The junior had a 335-pound squat, a 125-pound bench press and a 305-pound dead lift.
Lake
Lake had two lifters participate and finished with three points.
• In the 132-pound weight class, Natasha Patrick finished fifth with a total of 520-pound total. The freshman had a 165-pound squat, an 85-pound bench press and a 270-pound dead lift.
• In the 198-pound weight class, Autumn McGinty was fourth with a total of 600 pounds. The junior had a 235-pound squat, a 115-pound bench press and a 250-pound dead lift.
Sebastopol
Sebastopol had just one lifter participate and finished with five points after a second-place finish.
• In the 148-pound weight class, Blayze Barnes was second with a total of 650 pounds. The sophomore had a 240-pound squat, a 110-pound bench press and a 300-pound dead lift.
