In a back-and-forth series, home-field advantage proved to a real thing for the Greene County softball team.
Greene County scored a walk-off 4-3 in game one of the series but Newton County hammered the Lady Wildcats 12-0 on Monday.
But the Lady Wildcats finished the series off on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the Lady Cougars to take the Class 4A South State series win.
Newton County finishes the season with a 25-5 record.
Greene County 4, Newton County 1
The Lady Cougars gave up one big inning as the Lady Wildcats took a three-run win on Wednesday to clinch the three-game series.
After two scoreless innings, Greene County plated four in the bottom of the third. The Lady Wildcats opened the inning with back-to-back singles. After an out, Greene County then got back-to-back singles and led 3-0. After another single, Greene County doubled and drove in another run to go up 4-0.
Newton County scored its only run in the top of the sixth. After back-to-back singles by Maeli Ben and Mandarie Leach, courtesy runner Gracey Wood scored when Z Bell reached on an error.
Green County outhit Newton County 9-5 in the contest. Leach was 2-for-3 while Bell had a double. Ben and Mary Preston Williams each singled for Newton County.
Leach started in the circle and pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on nine hits. Lexi Addy pitched the last 1 1/3 innings and struck out two.
