The Newton basketball teams had a big week on the hardwoods as each team took a pair of double-digit wins.
The Lady Tigers beat Philadelphia 66-29 and then beat Forest 47-33. The Tigers also beat Philadelphia 77-47 and then beat Forest 47-36.
Newton is off or the week of Thanksgiving and will return to play on Tuesday, Dec. 3 as they host Northeast Lauderdale and then will play at Forest on Friday, Dec. 6. The Tigers will then play at the Rodney Hood Classic on Saturday, Dec. 7.
Newton boys 47, Forest 36
The Tigers jumped out to a fast start and held on to take an 11-point win over the Bearcats on Saturday.
Newton started fast and outscored Forest 22-8 in the first period while the Bearcats outscored the Tigers 11-10 in the second period and trailed 32-19 at the half. Forest outscored Newton 9-8 in the third and 8-7 in the fourth for the final margin.
Antoine Griffin led Newton with 18 points while De’Traun Brown and Daelyn Chapman each scored eight points. Kaden Robinson and Jimare Kincaid each had six points.
Newton girls 47, Forest 33
The Lady Tigers outscored the Lady Bearcats in every period and took a hard-fought 14-point win.
Newton outscored Forest 15-10 in the firs and 7-6 in the second to lead 22-16 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Forest 12-9 in the third and 13-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Erin Ware led Newton with 18 points while Anniston Adkins had 13 points. Jamiya Jones had seven points while Sommer Jordan had six points.
Newton boys 77, Philadelphia 47
The Tigers outscored the Tornadoes in every period and cruised to a 30-point win on Tuesday.
Newton led 16-12 at the end of the first and then outscored Philly 24-16 in the second to lead 40-28 at the half. Newton continued to extend the lead as the Tigers outscored the Tornadoes 18-10 in the third and 19-9 in the fourth to take the win.
De’Traun Brown led Newton with 27 points while Daelyn Chapman had 16 points. Antoine Griffin had 12 points while Jimare Kincaid had 10 points.
Newton girls 66, Philadelphia 29
The Lady Tigers dominated from the beginning to take a 37-point over the Lady Tornadoes.
Newton jumped out to an 18-7 lead in the first period and then outscored Philly 20-12 in the second to lead 38-19 at the half. The Lady Tigers continued to extend the lead in the second half, outscoring the Lady Tornadoes 16-6 in the third and 12-4 in the fourth.
Erin Ware led Newton with 17 points while Jamiya Jones had 15 points. Akyrin Berry had 13 points while Commer Jordan and Anniston Adkins each had six points apiece.
