The Newton County Academy Generals won two out of three games at the Class 2A North State Tournament this past week, finishing third and advancing to the state tournament.
The Generals opened the tournament with a big 69-41 win over West Memphis before losing to eventual North champion Rossville Academy 54-35 on Friday. The Generals then beat Lee Academy 46-39 on Saturday to finish third in the tournament.
The Generals advance to the Class 2A state tournament at Benton Academy this week. They will face Greenville St. Joseph on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The winner will play the winner of Rossville and Sylva Bay on Friday at 6 p.m. The boys championship game will be Saturday at 5:15 p.m.
NCA 46, Lee Academy (Ark.) 39
The Generals used a big fourth period as they pulled away and took a seven-point win over Lee Academy of Saturday.
Each team scored 11 points in the first period as NCA outscored Lee 13-7 to lead 24-18 at the half. But Lee fought back in the third period and outscored NCA 13-6 to take a 31-30 lead into the fourth period. But NCA finished strong as they outscored Lee 16-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Lee Hollingsworth and Riley Boswell each had 15 points to lead NCA while Lawson Reeves had 10 points. Reeves and Hollingsworth were named to the all-tournament team.
Rossville boys 54, NCA 35
Rossville dominated the first half and outscored NCA in every period to take a 19-point win.
Rossville outscored NCA 15-9 in the first and 16-6 in the second to lead 31-15 at the half. Rossville continued to extend its lead in the second half as they outscored NCA 15-13 in the third and 8-7 in the fourth.
Lawson Reeves led NCA with 10 points while Austin Upton had nine points.
NCA 69, West Memphis 41
The Generals outscored West Memphis in every period and finished strong to take a 28-point win on the opening day of the tournament.
NCA led 13-8 in the first period and outscored West Memphis 12-11 in the second to lead 25-19 at the half. NCA continued to extend its lead in the second half as they outscored West Memphis 19-11 in the third and 25-11 in the fourth to cruise to the win.
Riley Boswell and Lawson Reeves each scored 19 points apiece while Austin Upton had 10 points and 10 rebounds.
